Cert III in Boilermaking

Apprentices pursuing this trade typically work with heavy-gauge steel for engineering companies engaged in the fabrication and development of products made from steel of varying thicknesses, as well as non-ferrous materials. They learn to use a wide range of hand tools and specialist measuring equipment and to interpret detailed drawings to cut, shape, and assemble steel components using MIG, stick, submerged arc, oxy, and other welding processes. Apprentices may be involved in fabricating structural components such as beams, building supports, gantries, crane carriages, and jibs. Their work often includes manufacturing products from plate steel, angle iron, RHS, round sections, I-beams, U-sections, and occasionally plastic materials. This skill set can also be applied to producing mining equipment, large trailer bodies, excavation buckets, storage bins, transformer containers, pressure vessels, hoppers, cooling towers, smokestacks, and large pipework. Welders may specialize in specific areas such as pressure vessel welding, machinery and equipment repair, shipbuilding and repair, pipeline construction, or structural welding. This work is typically carried out in enclosed, well-equipped workshops, though welders may also be employed on construction sites, performing a variety of manual or machine-assisted welding tasks on major structures such as buildings and bridges.
